In the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, Malaysian badminton players Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik made a stunning comeback in the men’s doubles bronze medal match against Denmark, overcoming a near-defeat in the second round by winning six consecutive points to force a third round and ultimately securing victory.
In the Paris Olympic Games 2024, after a defeat to China in the Badminton Men’s Doubles semifinals, playing for the Bronze medal against Denmark might seem like a consolation prize to Malaysian viewers.
However, for Malaysian World no. 5 players Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, the semifinal match v.s. the World no. 2 players Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen was no cake walk either.
In the first round, the Denmark team were off to a strong start, winning handily with a 5-point lead (16-21). The Malaysian team seemed to be on the back foot, struggling to defend against the onslaught.
Then in the second round, our boys Chia and Soh started to match their ferocity, but found themselves unable to play catch-up with Astrup and Rasmussen’s 3-point lead.
As match point came around, Denmark was leading with 20 points, with Malaysia trailing behind at 16 points.
With just one more point left, Denmark seemed poised to land a straightforward 2-match victory and clinch the Bronze, culminating in a crushing loss for our anime-haired duo.

Then in a display that stunned the Denmark side, the two Malaysians and powered through the next 6 sets, going from 16-20 to 22-20, coming back from the brink of defeat for the deciding third round.
From what seemed like a foregone conclusion arose seeds of doubt from the Denmark side. Meanwhile, hope sprang up like the roar of a Malayan tiger from the Malaysian side.
By the midpoint, we were leading 11-7 to Denmark. The crowd on the Malaysian side was now completely energised, with chants of “Malaysia” echoing through the stands.
Astrup and Rasmussen were still recovering from the 2nd match’s upset, but rallied their courage again and equalised us at 19-19.
Now neck and neck, the last two points were a nail-biting experience for both sides. Then in a fantastic display of speed and agility, Chia and Soh won the next two points, grabbing the victory from the brink of defeat.
All in all, the Malaysian doubles team made a strong performance during these Olympics, leading to a well-earned bronze. Now Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik can walk home with their heads held high and a well-deserved rest, proving their World-class mettle once again.
Tomorrow, August 5th, Malaysia stands a chance to win another medal as Lee Zii Jia will play India’s Lakshya Sen (8.30pm Malaysian time) for the men’s singles bronze medal match. Don’t miss it!
