This happened towards the end of the pandemic in 2022. My son got a ‘U’ for allegedly using AI, and the teacher didn’t even read his coursework.”
My son wasn’t a top scorer, but he was solid. Mostly Bs, some As. He was doing his A-Levels at a small international school in Ampang. (The school has since shut down, which honestly says a lot.)
He was working on a history coursework assignment and asked us to proofread it. It was on Adolf Hitler and the rise of Nazi Germany. Not something you can cincai your way through.
I even had to do some reading myself just to keep up. My husband and I read it, made a few suggestions. He used some, ignored others, made his final edits and submitted it.
A few days later, he came to us. Hands shaking. Almost in tears. His assignment had been returned with a “U”. Ungraded.
His teacher had accused him of using AI to write it. Then it got worse.
“My teacher didn’t even read the assignment.”
My son spent hours researching, writing, and editing it. You could tell he cared. This coursework alone was worth around 30% of his final grade. Turns out there’s a grade worse than an “F.” According to him, the teacher ran it through plagiarism AI detection tools. It came back 74% plagiarized.
And that was it. He was told straight to his face there would be no checking. The assignment would not be assessed. The teacher saw the number and decided that was enough. He got detention too. Two weeks of detention. Not for cheating. Not for failing. For “poor attitude” and “disrespecting a teacher”.
All because he pointed out the obvious.
“You don’t see the problem here? You didn’t even read it.”
That’s when we stepped in. Because at that point, it wasn’t about one assignment anymore. It was about a teacher outsourcing their judgement to a tool, then punishing a student for questioning it. My husband has zero patience for this kind of thing.
The meeting went nowhere. The teacher kept pointing to the 74% and said her decision was final. So my husband asked to see the full analysis report. If it was plagiarized, then where did it come from?
Which paragraphs? Which sentences? Which sources? He was denied.
So he walked straight to the principal’s office. Suddenly, things changed. A proper review started. They compared his history assignment with his other subjects. English Language and Literature. Psychology. Business Studies.
Everything was consistent with his writing style. And here’s the kicker. Every assignment came back flagged for AI. All in the 60% to 70% range. So either my son is secretly an AI, or their software has flaws.
It didn’t take long to see the problem. The system was flagging the entire bibliography as plagiarized. Yes. The references. The part where students are required to cite sources. Remove that, and it drops to 9%.
Well below the school’s threshold. And this wasn’t just one assignment. It was across all his work. So the same coursework that got a zero… was suddenly acceptable. Nothing changed. Just a number on a report.
The teacher was given a warning letter. My son’s assignment was remarked. Final grade: A. Same piece of work. Two completely different outcomes. All because one person didn’t bother to do their job.
At the end of it, my husband said something that stuck with me.
“You know why these detectors flag good writing as AI? Because they were trained on good writing in the first place. Probably trained using stolen writing too.”
And honestly, it makes sense. AI isn’t the problem. Blindly trusting it is. We had to go all the way to the principal just to fix this. That alone says enough.
The moment teachers stop doing the work, they’ve already failed as educators.
