This story is about a Malaysian activist who rescued an elderly man allegedly locked inside a dilapidated home in Kelantan in a video shared on Tiktok earlier this month, sparking a nationwide discussion about elder care and community responsibility.
A Disturbing Discovery in Pasir Mas
A video shared on TikTok earlier this month drew widespread concern after Malaysian social activist Abbe Hae discovered an elderly man confined inside a deteriorating house in Pasir Mas.
Abbe said he received information from locals about the situation before visiting the home with members of his outreach group, Pertubuhan Jejak Jalanan.
What began as a routine welfare check quickly turned into a shocking discovery.
Found Inside a Locked Kitchen Room
According to Abbe, the situation became clear when the elderly man’s grandchild opened a kitchen door inside the house.
Inside, the team found the frail man confined in the room.
Abbe later shared his reaction on Facebook, describing the emotional impact of what he saw.
“I was left speechless when his grandchild opened the kitchen door where he had been locked inside. I was in tears in the car after seeing such a disturbing case.”
He added that villagers told him the elderly man had once taken very good care of his children and grandchildren.
Family Says It Was For His Safety
After the video gained traction online, a woman identifying herself as the elderly man’s granddaughter offered an explanation.
She said the door had been locked to prevent him from wandering outside due to memory issues.
According to her, the family was worried he might leave the house and become lost or injured.
Doctor Contacts Activist After Video Goes Viral
In a later update, Abbe said he was contacted by a doctor from Pasir Mas Hospital regarding the elderly man’s situation.
The doctor reportedly informed him that a family member intended to bring the elderly man back to live with them.
The family also said they had prepared a proper room in their home for him.
Abbe added that he would continue monitoring the situation to ensure the elderly man’s well-being.
A Case That Sparked National Discussion
The incident has also triggered wider conversations online about elder welfare and caregiving challenges in Malaysia.
While the family said the confinement was meant to prevent the elderly man from wandering, many netizens argued that seniors experiencing memory decline require proper care, supervision, and medical support.
Advocates say the case highlights the need for greater awareness about eldercare and stronger community support systems.
Why Community Vigilance Matters
As Malaysia’s population ages, families are increasingly facing the challenge of caring for elderly relatives, particularly those with cognitive conditions such as dementia.
Experts often note that elder welfare is not only a family issue but also a community concern that requires cooperation between families, healthcare providers, and local support networks.
Cases like this serve as reminders for communities to stay vigilant and check in on vulnerable seniors to ensure they are living in safe and dignified conditions.
