This is a story of how a woman found out that her husband was cheating after she received a notification on her phone that someone weighed in on her digital weighing scale while she was away on a work trip.
After the birth of my second child, I was adamant to lose the 20 kilos that I put on and I invested in a smart weighing scale that could measure your body weight, fat percentage etc. It was one of those smart devices that I could connect to an app on my phone and everytime I weighed myself I would get a notification on my phone.
Three months after I gave birth, I went back to work, and within a couple of weeks I got an assignment that I needed to travel. That was when I first saw the odd notification on my app. One random day I got a notification that a new weight was logged at 56kgs. I instantly knew it was a mistake because I weighed nothing less than 70kg and my husband was larger and taller than me, around 90 or so kilos.
The first time, I thought it was a mistake, and I deleted the entry, and didn’t think of it again.
Then around two months later, I was travelling again, and the same thing happened. The same weight – 56kgs. That strikes me as odd. Why did the same weight appear, and how could it be a coincidence that I was travelling this time too? I started to grow suspicious. During this time, things with my husband were actually going quite well. He was an attentive father to our kids. Sure we were not as intimate as before, but with two kids and two full time jobs between the two of us – it was not weird.
When I got back home that round, I started to keep an eye out on my husband a bit more than I usually would. To see if he would come home when he said he would, if he was late, when he was busy texting. To my surprise, there never was anything he did that was suspicious. He was always attentive to what we needed as a family and took care of us.
I thought I was being paranoid – looking for trouble when there was none. Thinking to myself, I must be stressed from my work and being a mother than I was starting to put blame on him. However, on my third trip, I felt my suspicion confirmed.
There was another weigh in, this time for 59kgs.
I was wrecking my brain, thinking how I would confront my husband with no evidence besides my twice deleted weighed-in entry. On my way back home that trip, I remembered that my neighbour that lived directly in front of me had a CCTV in front of their house, with a clear view of my front gate. I came up with an excuse about how I wanted to check if there was a delivery while I was away as the courier was making a claim that the parcel was already delivered at a certain time.
Being friends with my neighbour paid off because she was very courteous to let me check the app, and luckily it was just two days after “the incident”. I typed in the date and time with shaky hands and rewinded the footage. That’s when my fears became a reality.
I could see my husband return home in our car, around 2pm. Our kids were staying with their grandparents as it was the school holidays so I knew he had no reason to return home in the middle of the day on a workday. Through the blurry CCTV footage, you could see him get out of the driver’s seat, and a woman get out of the passenger seat. She looked young, but I can’t be sure as the footage was not as clear as I wished it to be.
I quickly recorded what I saw on my phone and told my friend I got what I needed. I rushed home and waited for my husband to come home. I immediately confronted him – telling him what I know and asking him to own up. To my surprise, he immediately owned up to what he did. He didn’t defend himself, admitting he made a huge mistake and was tempted to explore some of his desires that he felt we couldn’t explore ourselves.
He came clean and told me that when I go out of town, he would download tinder or a similar app, always making it clear to the women that he was not looking for anything serious.
He mentioned that he always regrets it and hates himself after. I’m not sure I can believe him anymore.
However, we decided to give our marriage another try, and I decided to forgive him. We are currently working with a couple’s therapist to work through our deeper issues that caused him to cheat in the first place. I am finding it so hard to let it go, I’m always sneakily checking his phone, and I’m afraid to take any work assignments that would have me travel. I also can’t talk to any of my friends about this as I don’t want to air our dirty laundry in public. I hope this story is a reminder to women that they never know what their husband is doing behind their back, even if they seem like the perfect husband.
