This is a story of how there’s an increase in the younger generation that are turning down traditional higher education for online jobs.
Myra, 21, dropped out of university last year when she realized that she felt more fulfilled doing her online job. She works as a Personal Assistant and Virtual Assistant for 3 clients in the US. Between her 3 part time jobs, she earns around RM 4500, depending on the currency exchange.
“All of my jobs combined do not even take me 25 hours a week. Since it’s all remote, I can work according to my own schedule. I work fast, so I end up doing my task ahead of time, and have plenty of time left to relax and indulge in my hobbies,” said Myra.
“I decided to drop out of uni because I wasn’t sure I wanted to pursue that major. I was studying accounting and it was just not my calling. Maybe I will go back to uni once I am certain what I want to study.”
Aisha, aged 20, is also a PA to authors online. She assists 2 different authors with scheduling, social media and marketing. “I love my job because I want to be an author one day. By working with these 2 authors, I can interact in this world and learn many things.”
“Even if I was studying literature in university, I wouldn’t get this kind of hands-on experience about how to navigate the world of being an author. This job leaves me with plenty of spare time to read my books and even dabble in creative writing,” said Aisha.
Aisha has used her spare time to write and get published in local and international websites. From her two jobs she earns up to RM3000 a month by working just 20 hour work weeks. In my spare time, I go for local events – book clubs, visit the libraries around KL and jalan-jalan around the malls.
“I’ll just bring my laptop and work from somewhere different everyday.”
Both Aisha and Myra’s tasks revolve around scheduling, admin tasks, social media management and marketing ideas. When asked how they landed the job, Myra smiled and just said “luck!” Both girls found this job via social media when the person they were following posted a search for an assistant.
“At this rate, I’m not sure if and when I will go to uni,” said Aisha. Most of my friends that are older than me are always complaining about 9-5 work life and I feel I already hit the jackpot.
More young people these days are of the opinion that university is a “scam” because after all the money spent on education, you end up in debt and spend the rest of your life paying it off.
This raises the question: Is a university education really necessary in this day and age?
