A post shared during Ramadan has been making its way across Malaysian social media, gathering thousands of reactions, not because anything dramatic happened, but because two strangers chose to be considerate when nobody was asking them to.
Fifteen minutes before buka
According to the woman who shared the story on Threads, she was at a mamak stall around fifteen minutes before the time for Muslims to break their fast when two Chinese men sitting nearby came up to her with an unexpected question.
Their food was already on the table, but instead of simply eating, they approached her and asked: “Kak, boleh saya makan dulu? Sangat lapar.”
She told them it was completely fine, reassuring them that there was no issue at all.
She hadn’t anticipated the question and was taken aback that they had felt it necessary to ask in the first place.
But what followed made it even more memorable.
A wish that caught her off guard
The moment the azan rang out to signal the start of iftar, the two men paused, turned to the people around them and offered a sincere selamat berbuka before finally starting their meal.
It was a small, unscripted moment; but for the woman, it landed deeply.
She wrote that the encounter left her feeling genuinely touched, and that it served as a reminder that there are still many good-hearted people out there, even in the most ordinary of settings.
Netizens call it “truly Malaysian”
The post spread quickly, drawing thousands of reactions from people who found the gesture both heartwarming and quietly significant. Many praised the two men for showing a level of consideration that nobody had required of them.
One commenter put it plainly: “They didn’t have to but they did. Very cultured.”
Another described the two men as “truly Malaysian”, saying that how a person carries themselves in small moments says everything about their character.
While some noted that non-Muslims are of course free to eat during Ramadan without needing anyone’s permission, the broader response was one of appreciation, for a gesture that cost nothing but left a lasting impression on everyone who witnessed it.
