This story is about RM550 left behind at an ATM, a stranger who refused to claim it, and a reminder that integrity still exists when no one is watching.
Everyone knows that split second when they spot money lying around and their brain does a quick calculation: Keep it, or do the right thing and return it. In this story, one person in Sungai Petani didn’t even hesitate. Their good deed has Malaysians both inspired and playfully envious.
The Machine Spat Out Someone Else’s Cash
It happened around 9am at the Hong Leong Bank branch in Legenda Heights. The Good Samaritan was using one of the ATMs when the second machine from the right suddenly rejected a deposit and spat out 11 RM50 notes.
That’s RM550 just sitting there. That’s a week’s salary for some.
Instead of pocketing it, the finder immediately posted in a local Sungai Petani Facebook group to track down the owner. The message was short and direct: “Please collect the money from bank staff.”
No drama. No asking for a reward. Just trying to get the cash back to whoever lost it.
Netizens Had Feelings About This
The post blew up, but not just with praise. Sure, plenty of people celebrated the samaritan’s honesty. But others were refreshingly real about it. Some admitted they’d probably struggle with the same moral test. One comment summed up what a lot of us were thinking: “Why is it never me who finds money?”
Fair question, honestly. I think the question nobody wants to ask themself is “Would I keep the money or return it?” Being tempted is not the question. Everyone gets tempted to one degree or another and it’s what you do that matters. We’d return the money.
There ARE Good People Out There
This happened in a climate where Malaysians are losing serious money to scams, and those stories usually don’t end well. So when someone actually does the right thing with found cash that they could have walked away with, it hits different.
It’s proof that not everyone’s out to take advantage, even when no one’s watching, Malaysians are still good people at heart who will do the right thing.
