Here’s everything you need to know about the shocking facts of the ongoing GISBH case.
Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings Sdn Bhd (GISBH) has been at the centre of controversy these past few weeks.
Earlier this September, PDRM conducted multiple raids on 20 welfare homes allegedly operated by GISBH, which has led to the rescue of 572 victims and the arrest of over 300 individuals, including GISBH’s top management.
The sting operation, codenamed Ops Global, has exposed the worst case of child abuse and neglect Malaysia has seen in decades.
Here’s what you should know about the facts of the case:
Rampant child abuse in GISBH welfare homes
During the investigations, it has been revealed that hundreds of children, who had been claimed to be orphans, were actually the offspring of GISBH members themselves. Allegedly, they were given up by their parents and raised in welfare homes run by the organisation.
Based on initial reports, the children were raised in conditions of neglect, uncleanliness, and physical and sexual abuse. They were punished using heated metal objects and in some cases, taught to perform sexual acts on each other.
As of current reports, 13 of the children had been sodomised, the acts allegedly committed by both caretakers and religious teachers at these welfare homes.
In one instance, three teaching assistants from a religious school in Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan, are facing 14 charges for sexually abusing children.
In another instance, a boy was reportedly rescued from a welfare home associated with GISBH in Tapah, Perak, believed to be a victim of abuse after a video showing the child being stomped on went viral on social media.
GISBH has denied all allegations of physical and sexual abuse, deviant teachings and the misuse of funds solicited under false pretenses.
Former child speaks out: “GISBH prepared food with feet-soaked water”
Sabrina Bolivar, daughter of a former high-ranking official of GISBH, has come forward to reveal that the allegations made against GISBH are true.
“I was one of the children who were held by GISBH,” she said, revealing that she was rescued by her grandmother when she was six-years old, along with her three other siblings and mother. She added that her father had 28 children and her mother was the fourth wife.
Sabrina described her life in the cult with 27 siblings as being neglected and unhygienic:
“I experienced it with my own eyes when I visited his home in Rawang. All my siblings in the house were sharing a towel and the toilet was super dirty. I even puked because we were served fried noodles every day in a single tray,” she said.
Revealing why she had never eaten at any eateries linked to GISBH, she said that since she was young, she heard the stories about how the devotees prepared food using water to soak Al-Arqam’s founder Ashaari Muhammad or Abuya’s feet.
GISBH operates 12 restaurant chains both at home and abroad, according to its website which is currently placed “under maintenance”. These eateries include:
- Ikhwan Delights in Sungai Penchala
- GH Corner restaurants in Jakarta and Cairo
- Nur Muhammad Cafe in Sydney
- Nur Malaysia restaurants in Makkah, Dubai, Paris, London, Amman and the Uzbekistan capital Tashkent.
- Love & Care Restaurant in Bangkok and Mihrimah Restaurant in Singapore.
Sabrina also shared that it was not her intention to call for a boycott on Muslim business or restaurants, but expressed her wish to take action due to the neglect of children and women happening in this group.
“I have seen many people backing the cult on TikTok and on the Internet, so I have to say something to raise awareness, especially in Malaysia,” she had said in a series of TikTok videos.
GISBH follows deviant Al-Arqam teachings
Additionally, GISBH has been accused of espousing the deviant teachings of Al-Arqam, a sect banned by the National Fatwa Council in 1994. The doctrine is viewed as a serious threat to national security, particularly concerning the Islamic teachings in the country.
Following revelations by Malaysia Center for the Study of Heresy (PUKAS) of alleged heresy in August, the police had confiscated hundreds of items linked to the deviant teachings, which are currently being examined by Jakim.
Perlis Mufti, Datuk Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin has stated that GISBH members “attribute their leaders with the power to perform miracles and claim they possess knowledge of the unseen,” adding that this is a distortion of true Islamic teachings. As such, Perlis has become the first state to declare GISBH’s practices deviant, especially after its Mufti raised the issue of violence and cruelty associated with the group.
To achieve absolute obedience, GISBH members are exposed to the doctrine of Aurad Muhammadiah through pamphlets and reading materials and made to comply with all directives.
“Those who refuse are threatened, while compliant members are elevated to leadership positions and are given specific women as wives.”
According to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, investigations have found reports of mass brainwashing within the group to enforce devotion to its top leaders as well as threats, blackmail and the offer of wives as rewards.
Some male members reportedly have multiple wives and many of their children are placed in GISBH homes. One investigation revealed a member with four wives and 34 children, but only two of the children lived with him. The remaining 32 children are believed to have been given over to GISBH to be their ‘orphan’ children.
After Ops Global was conducted, the parents of the 572 children and teenagers have yet to come forward to claim their children, instead denying that the children were their own and claiming the children were orphans. It is believed that they are instructed to say this in order not to reveal the ruse that the children were pretended to be orphans to ensure that the welfare homes continue receiving donations.
GISBH has never paid its taxes
Aside from child abuse, the police’s joint investigation with the Inland Revenue Board revealed that GISBH has never paid taxes.
Police have frozen millions of ringgit worth of land, assets and vehicles linked to the company. Among other assets frozen included 14 plots of land, 38 vehicles worth almost RM4 million, nine horses, 14 rabbits and three peacocks, RM18,650 cash and two watches worth RM600, and RM882,795.94 cash in 153 bank accounts. Fifteen of those accounts had been closed.
Additionally, police have received 10 reports from employees of GISBH alleging they were not paid any wages during their employment at the company’s premises nationwide. The company also failed to provide allowances to the affected workers.
A Facebook post is allegedly seeking to raise funds to assist the children of affected GISBH members. “The public is advised not to fall for this, as it is believed to be an attempt to exploit the current situation,” Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain cautioned.
The GISBH scandal has shocked the nation, revealing a deeply disturbing network of child abuse, religious deviance and fraud. As authorities continue to investigate, the case highlights the urgent need for stricter oversight of welfare homes and religious organisations in Malaysia.
