A chance encounter on a busy Kuala Lumpur street left Malaysian entrepreneur Magindren Kuppusamy with more than he bargained for.
Walking through Bukit Bintang, he noticed a man selling tissue packets by the roadside, someone who, he would later find out, had been working the same street for 30 years. Same spot. Same traffic. Same uncertainty. Yet the man carried himself with a calm that was hard to ignore.
“Yet look at him, calm, focused, with that quiet smile. No bitterness. No complaint written on his face,” Magindren wrote on Facebook.
He approached the man, expecting to hear a story of hardship.
The man, originally from Kota Baru, Kelantan, gave him something else entirely.
He Doesn’t Worry About Tomorrow
“He said he doesn’t have dreams and doesn’t worry about tomorrow,” Magindren shared. “That line hits hard.”
For someone like Magindren, running a business, managing staff, thinking about cash flow, expansion and reputation, the remark stopped him in his tracks.
“Most of us live in tomorrow. We carry tomorrow on our shoulders every day,
” he wrote. “And here’s a man who survives day by day but sleeps peacefully.”
Acceptance Over Ambition
What struck Magindren wasn’t that the tissue seller lacked drive or ambition. It was something harder to name.
“It’s not that he lacks ambition. It’s that he has mastered acceptance,” he wrote. “There’s a kind of freedom in not negotiating with the future. No expectations. No comparison. No chasing validation. Just today’s effort, today’s meal, today’s smile.”
He left the encounter with two packets of tissue and, as he put it, a heavier mind.
“That contrast says more about life than any motivational seminar ever could. Maybe happiness is not about having nothing.
Maybe it’s about wanting less. Maybe it’s about not letting tomorrow steal today.”
