Some say once you get married, you must say goodbye to your close friendships. Here’s how a wife’s jealousy affected the ‘bromance’ between two old friends.
Zak and I have been best friends for 16 years. We went to school together and we even bunked in the same room during PLKN.
As grown-ups, we used to run a business together selling aphrodisiacs. Naturally, we spent a lot of time together to make it work. On some nights, we wouldn’t leave the office till it was after 10pm.
However, this caused a lot of friction from Zak’s wife, Suraya. She would constantly wonder why he would come home late.
At first, we just brushed off her nagging as “normal” wife behaviour. But we had no idea how far this nagging would go – to the point it even involved a JAKIM officer.
My best friend’s wife accused him of infidelity
As the business profits dropped and we had to stay back late to meet the targets, Suraya began to accuse him of infidelity. Each time he came home late, a barrage of questions would be waiting for him.
“Why are you back so late? Were you trying out your aphrodisiacs on other girls? Did the two of you visit the massage parlour late at night?” Suraya demanded.
“Sayang, I didn’t even leave the office. You know that. I’ve to man the support line, ” said Zak, trying to calm her down.
“All night?” She yelled.
“Yelah, kan support line tu sampai 10 PM. I didn’t leave the office at all and I was with Malik the whole time. Kan, Malik, we only left to bungkus some nasi goreng?” he asked me.
I just stood there and nodded awkwardly.
My best friend’s wife asked if we were gay
This carried on for a while, until one day Suraya confronted Zak after checking his phone for evidence. She told him she found tons of suspicious messages between him and me.
Then she dropped the most unthinkable accusation on Zak:
“Are you gay?”
Suraya squinted, her eyes shifting between me and Zak. We looked at each other incredulously.
“Sayang,” Zak began. “What are you saying?”
Suraya yelled, “Don’t sayang me. Are you sleeping together?”
“What do I need to explain? This is ridiculous!” Zak exclaimed.
Crying, his wife pointed an accusing finger at both of them. “Why didn’t you tell me you are gay? Why did you marry me in the first place?”
I could only roll my eyes while my friend tried to placate his wife. The messages she found? Just everything from business strategy to changing suppliers to random memes. Zak told me to go home while he sorted this out.
Things took a weird turn when JAKIM got involved in the drama
However, it didn’t stop there. Things took a crazy turn when one family member even called JAKIM to investigate us for a possible homosexual relationship.
How it happened was, Suraya had started complaining about this to both sides of their family. Her side naturally sided with her, while his side admonished Zak over the fact that he had been spending too much time at work.
And because she had an uncle who was neighbours with the son of a JAKIM office, the said officer decided to pay a visit to Zak’s family.
He tirelessly counselled Zak, even offering to pray for him.
“There is a cure for homosexuality, Zak. Tuhan ciptakan manusia berpasang-pasangan. Janganlah lawan ketentuan Allah,” he said.
“I’m saying this one last time: I am NOT gay and I am NOT having an affair! Please leave me alone!” Zak was at his wit’s end.
Our ‘bromance’ was over, and our business partnership ended
As a result of this whole debacle, Zak’s family forbade him to see me. Suraya was jubilant. She finally had her husband all to herself.
Unfortunately, our partnership was dissolved, and we went our separate ways. I ended up co-founding my own digital agency with my now-fiancee, while Zak started a modest restaurant.
I’m happy to say that I’m now engaged and living a happy life. Meanwhile, from what I hear, Zak is still doing his best to achieve matrimonial happiness with his wife.
Once in a while, Zak and I would text each other in code, and we would meet up secretly to have a drink. We joked that I was his ‘mistress’. And for a few hours every few months, we’d be best friends again.
How do you think this could have been resolved?
