“My Gawd! You’ve struck gold! Your crush just asked you out on a date! A DATE!!!!! Never in your mind did you think that would be possible!!!”
Okay, now breathe in, and breathe out.
Do not panic. You’ve got a few days to get ready. You rush out to buy a new outfit (costing you a whole week’s salary), endure a facial with agonising blackhead removals (arghh…the pain! ), and so on.
And on the day itself, you get your hair done (that sets you back by another hundred bucks).
But it’ll be worth it, right? RIGHT? After all, this will be THE MOST AMAZING DATE EVER! You’re both going to fall in love and live happily ever after.
Except that only happens in fairytales. It’s time to step back to reality, my friend. Here we present some fun facts many lovestruck millennials (and Gen-Z’s) have faced.
HELLO
Expectation: You had me at hello.
Reality: Eww, stay away from me, you weirdo!
Check out a first date gone wrong when the girl ditched the guy for being a weirdo. And it was all documented live by this guy who is a YouTuber!
THE TALK
Expectation: You guys will have so much in common that you won’t even realise the night is over.
Reality:
You: How’s the weather today?
Your date: It’s cloudy.
You: Oh
Your date: Do you think it will rain?
You: Maybe.
Your date: Oh.
Awkward silence………
DINNER TIME
Expectation: You’re going to dine at the finest restaurant in town.
Reality: You end up at a mamak stall.
THE CHEMISTRY
Expectation: You sizzle. Ohh yeah, baby.
Reality: You fizzle. Cringe.
AT THE END OF THE FIRST DATE
Expectation: You make out and become a steady couple.
Reality: You ain’t gonna see them again. Ever.
Well, folks, don’t say we didn’t warn you. First dates are usually less sweet and smooth sailing than all those rom-com movies you watched growing up.
That being said, however, keep going out on dates and meeting new people.
All you have to do is set realistic expectations. Never ever assume anything about your date, ask questions, get to know one another, and you might realise that, hey, your date is quite charming beneath all the nervous exterior.
Be adventurous, try something new (be it a unique dining experience, visit a new outlet, or maybe even try out a form of sports together), and create the first of many memories to come.
Who’s to know? Your date might actually end up being THE ONE.
