A story shared on the Malaysian Facebook page “大马一定行” (Malaysians Can Do It) has sparked discussion online after a hawker shared how he stood his ground against a customer who expected their large takeaway order to jump the queue.
A busy Sunday at the stall
The incident took place on a Sunday during peak hours.
After finishing their meal, the customer placed a takeaway order for 12 packets of fried dry egg noodles.
Though the hawker was aware that the customer likely assumed the large order would be prioritised, he chose to follow the existing order sequence and serve everyone in turn.
The ultimatum
After waiting for some time, the customer checked on their order and was told it would take a little longer.
The reply came quickly: “If you can’t make my order now, I’m cancelling it.”
The hawker cancelled the order on the spot.
He said he had no regrets, as it would not have been fair to the other customers who had already been waiting.
The hawker’s unwritten rules
The hawker used the post to share several guidelines for customers ordering at busy stalls.
He advised customers to indicate upfront if they are short on time, especially on weekends, and to place takeaway orders together with their dine-in order rather than after finishing their meal.
He also suggested worrying less about food getting cold, noting it is better than placing a last-minute order during peak hours and waiting over 30 minutes.
Lastly, he recommended bringing a thermal container or asking which dish is currently being prepared, as stir-frying in the same large wok is usually the fastest option.
