An 84-year-old woman who was pulled from a burning overturned car just moments before it was fully engulfed in flames is now recovering in hospital, and her family is searching for the three young men who made it possible.
What happened at Bandar Utama
The incident took place at around 3.35pm on March 29 along Persiaran Bandar Utama near the BU2 park area.
The woman is believed to have lost control of her vehicle, causing it to overturn and catch fire. Three young men – one Chinese, one Malay and one Indian – who were nearby acted quickly and pulled her out before the flames took over.
Three days after the incident, the charred wreckage remained at the scene, surrounded by yellow police tape. Curious drivers passing by stopped to take photos before driving on.
Stable but shaken
Speaking to reporters at Hospital Sungai Buloh, the victim’s daughter, who declined to be named, said her mother had undergone surgery on her arm and was expected to be discharged soon.
The elderly woman was seen with her right arm bandaged and visible facial injuries, and was not in a condition to be interviewed.
A family that almost lost everything
The daughter described the moment the family pieced together what had happened.
“Everything happened so suddenly. After the accident, my mother was disoriented and didn’t know what had happened. It was only later that we found out three young men had saved her. At that time, the car was already smoking and could have exploded at any moment. I am truly thankful that they risked their lives to rescue her. If not for them, my mother might not be here today.”
A husband hoping to say thank you
The victim’s husband said he had been at a nearby clinic when the crash occurred, having been driven there by his wife earlier. He received a call from a security guard and rushed back immediately.
He described his wife as an independent woman who had been driving for over 10 years without any prior accidents, with the car regularly maintained. It is believed the vehicle may have skidded before the crash, though she was reportedly driving slowly at the time.
“I haven’t had the chance to thank them. If I knew where they live, I would definitely visit them personally to express my gratitude,” he said.
