A video shared on Tiktok earlier this month has ignited concern after Malaysian social activists discovered an elderly man allegedly confined inside a run-down rural house in Pasir Mas, Kelantan.
What began as a routine check-in soon turned into a dramatic rescue that has drawn attention across Malaysia, prompting calls for better eldercare and more community vigilance for forgotten seniors.
A Call From the Village
When Abbe Hae, leader of local outreach group Pertubuhan Jejak Jalanan, received an anonymous tip about a senior man in need, he expected a frail neighbour struggling with mobility, not what greeted him at the end of the dusty lane leading to a dilapidated kampung home.
With the help of neighbours, Abbe’s team forced open the creaking door and found the elderly man sitting on a worn mat, weak and confused. According to villagers who stayed nearby, the elderly man had been living like this for months, cut off from the outside world.
“I was left speechless,” Abbe later wrote on his Facebook account. “For your information, this elderly man took very good care of his children and grandchildren, according to the villagers.”
Neighbors revealed that the elderly man’s children had moved to the city years ago, leaving him in the care of a relative. But as his health deteriorated, she reportedly began keeping him inside the house, only unlocking the door occasionally to bring food. Some villagers said the relative feared he would wander off due to dementia.
A Rescue Unfolds
Posted footage shows volunteers gently helping the frail octogenarian out of the house. The elderly man’s face, gaunt from isolation, was pale, and his clothes disheveled. The team immediately took him to a nearby clinic for a medical check-up.
Family Claims and Community Reaction
The elderly man’s granddaughter explained that her intention was never to harm him: she said she had been keeping him indoors to prevent him from wandering due to suspected memory issues and feared he might get lost or hurt.
Yet many on social media were unconvinced. Commenters argued that dementia and confusion aren’t reasons to isolate a loved one without adequate care, they’re precisely the reasons that require structured support, including medical supervision or assisted living solutions.
Since the video went viral, concerned citizens have called for clearer eldercare policies and community monitoring to prevent similar situations in other kampungs and towns.
A New Beginning for the elderly man
Following the rescue, community volunteers arranged clean clothing, meals, and follow-up medical care for the elderly man. While plans were initially made to find a care home closer to the city, Abbe’s team shares that the man’s daughter has now pledged to take him into her own home and improve his living conditions.
Abbe confirmed that he would continue checking on the elderly man regularly, a promise many believe reflects the compassion and duty of care that too often goes missing for Malaysia’s aging population.
Broader Conversation on Elder Welfare
This case has sparked renewed discussion on the importance of community support, eldercare education, and accessible healthcare services for seniors; especially in rural areas where oversight may be limited and families are spread thin.
Experts stress that elder neglect isn’t just a family problem; it’s a societal challenge requiring collaboration between local leaders, healthcare providers, and social services to ensure vulnerable citizens are not forgotten.
