Step aside, hockey-masked slashers and possessed nuns! While Hollywood has its fair share of cult classics, nothing beats Asian horror stories.
We’ve all grown up in Malaysia knowing a few friends who have had close encounters with the supernatural.
Here are some hair-raising experiences with the supernatural that befell these unfortunate Malaysians:
Horror Story #1: The UiTM Dungun students who stayed behind in a haunted house
No one in their right mind would willingly stay in a place that is inhabited by malignant spirits unless they had no other choice. This unfortunately is what happened to a UiTM Dungun student named Mirah who shared a house with 5 housemates.
Mirah and her housemates would stay up late at night to finish assignments, when they allegedly started seeing various shadows: A little girl with her hair down, a shadowy figure with red eyes on a cupboard, and more shadows pacing around the house.
Too afraid to sleep, they would stay up all night until dawn huddled together in the same mattress. It got to the point that 3 of the housemates moved out because they couldn’t take the lack of sleep any longer.
However, Mirah and the one other housemate decided to stay behind to study for exams – and face the horrors head on.

Horror Story #2: The motorcyclist’s body which stood up on its own
In this story, an EMT shared how he had just arrived at the scene of a gruesome accident where a motorcyclist had collided with a car
After checking his vitals, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Just as the EMTs were about to transport him to a stretcher, something incredible happened. According to the EMT:
“I watched in disbelief as the victim got up and walked over to check on his wrecked motorcycle. The victim smiled at me and tried to say something through his broken jaw but couldn’t. Just as suddenly as he had risen, he just collapsed.”
The EMT shared in his story that he remembered checking his vitals before pronouncing him dead, and he believes that between his fractured skull and chest, there was no way he could have survived long enough to do that.
Was this medically possible, or was the EMT hallucinating?

Horror Story #3: The schoolgirls who experienced possession in a Seremban boarding school
This mass hysteria event happened in a boarding school, Sekolah Menengah Teknik Ampangan in Seremban.
Multiple girls were in the prayer room of the school when they saw a “monkey with really long black hair” hanging in the doorway of a prayer room.
“Their eyes were twitching but their gaze was just fixed on the monkey in the doorway – and their eyes were just pitch black,” shared the story’s author.
The girls were sent to Hospital Seremban, where they woke up with no memory of what had happened. Later, one of them asked her uncle, a famous spiritual person, for help.
He gave her a clothed nail to put under her pillow and instructed her to read a few surahs from the Quran. After that, she discovered that she could “see” all kinds of spirits.
“I used to think of these spiritual stories as a scare tactic that was meant to keep the students in check. After experiencing all of these first hand, I don’t think it’s a scare tactic – it really does happen,” she shared in her story.

Horror Story #4: The ghost hunter’s teddy bear which went missing
In this story, two Malaysian friends were out exploring abandoned houses in the Subang Jaya area of Klang Valley.
Calling themselves avid ‘ghost hunters’, they sought out abandoned buildings in SS14, SS15, and USJ 6 and explored them at night, hoping to stumble upon the paranormal.
One day, they found an empty house that was for sale because a little girl had died in a freak accident.
For some reason, they thought it would be a good idea to bring along a teddy bear “for the little girl’s spirit to play with”. But on the third night, when they returned, the teddy bear had gone missing.
