The world of Tiktok is a vast one with many subcultures. You’ve got booktok for the bookworms, cleantok for those obsessed with sparkly kitchen counters, and witchtok for those into spiritual wellness (and maybe some love spells).
The amount of content available on the app is mountainous and ever-growing, which means there is something out there for everyone. It also means, however, that there is stuff out there that ISN’T for everyone.
Tiktok influencer @angelloweee made her recording artist debut when Warner Music Malaysia released a music video of her Mandarin Chinese version of Janna Nick’s viral song ‘Gatal’ on their Youtube page. The music video has angelloweee doing her “famous bum dance”, the dance that helped launch her into Tiktok stardom and amassed her staggering 10.4 million followers on the app.
“What’s the point of studying so hard?”
Earlier this week a netizen tweeted about angellowee, referring to her only as “A Malaysian TikTok girl”, yet he put a photo of her in the tweet.
“A Malaysian TikTok girl with over 10 million followers was just signed by Warner Music Malaysia. She became famous for shaking her butt in tight dresses but yet, your degree will definitely get you that raise.”
He has since deleted the tweet and acknowledged that it was problematic, however he did not apologise.
There were a number of people who agreed with him and joined in on the snide remarks and critical judgements, but there were more who called him out on his misogynistic behaviour, stating that it is wrong for him to diminish her achievements.
Anyone who has any sort of social media account knows that getting likes is not an easy task. Content creators have to constantly come up with new material and produce posts that will gain traction and interest.
It’s a strategy game of its own – some types of content do better than others and creators will leverage on that to do well.
To criticise someone for their content and bring education into the discussion is dismissive and backward. It’s 2022, that’s how social media works, you can’t have possibly gone through a pandemic where the most contact you had with the outside world was through your screen and still not know this.
“If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all.”
Photo from Disney’s Bambi (1942)
It’s a quote from Thumper the rabbit in the 1942 children’s movie Bambi and it fits perfectly in this situation. Angellowee’s success, or any other booty shaking influencer for that matter, has no impact on most of our individual lives, so why be so critical and hateful about it?
These creators have found something that can gain attention and clicks, and their audience enjoys consuming it. Spending that time and effort to craft a caption in an attempt to belittle their achievements tells more about your character than theirs.
