I still remember the looks and faces people gave me whenever I said I did not receive my degree qualification.
I still remember the phrase, “You will not be able to go anywhere or far without a degree certificate.” “It will be a waste of time for employers to employ you”, “Oops, I’m sorry you didn’t understand the term that we were talking about cause you didn’t go through a Degree, right?”
It certainly did put me off back then, but not anymore.
It had been 3 years since I left college, and I did not regret my decision to not further my tertiary education.
It was mainly because of financial issues that needed to be prioritized and juggled in between, but it all turned out well.
I continued pursuing what I wanted to do; it also did not prevent employers from setting aside my application form.
All I had with me was a diploma certificate (if you need to know), common sense, confidence, and relevant knowledge.
“At the end of the day, it is about how you position and present yourself, manage expectations, and hold on conversations. Not so much on blabbering about whatever examinations you did, but showing them what you are equipped and capable of.”
I told myself that I needed to work twice or three times harder than ordinary fresh grads; I knew I needed to do my best to excel.
It has been 3 years since I started my first job in an agency, slowly and surely climbing up the corporate ladder.
Delivering surprises to clients and bringing shocking faces to people with my solutions, knowing I did not own a higher education certificate.
I did feel left out at times, and I did feel “not okay” at times. A major shoutout to my family and friends for constantly nurturing me with positivity; I lived through it.
Thanks to my siblings, who showed me what it is like to succeed without a tertiary education. All 3 of them landed in a great position and, as of now, are living life at its very best.
All in all, never limit yourself to pursuing whatever you want.
If you were fortunate to obtain a degree certificate, good for you. If you couldn’t have one, make the best out of it.
Life never stops right there; it is all about you making life better.
