Secondary school is an awkward time. It’s bad enough that we have to go through the awkwardness of puberty, but what makes it worse is being stuck in a school full of hundreds or even thousands of other puberty stricken students. Needless to say, it’s a great combination for disaster in most cases.
IRL approached a few Malaysians and 3 of them shared their craziest secondary school experiences!
1. Huge fight stopped classes for 2 hours and the police had to come in with guns
I was in the science stream and the classes for science stream students were in the last block, far away from everything else. There were maybe 8 classrooms along with the science labs? Anyway, we usually kept to ourselves because of how far away we were located from the rest of the school.
One day, we were horsing around when we realised that our teacher was really late. Like, 30 minutes late kinda late. The other classes in our block were also messing around. We didn’t get much time to ourselves and as science stream students we often had to stay back the latest.
Suddenly, the monitor of the class next to ours rushed in exclaiming that there was a huge fight! Around 30 – 40 guys were stampeding around the middle blocks of the school and the teachers were rushing around trying to stop them. It was pretty gory too, he said. At some point, the guys from one side threw the guys from the other side into the huge longkang at the back of the school and jumped in to stomp on their faces!
Two of my friends were the two tallest prefects in the school. They were really easy going guys who were respected by the other students for their chill. The teachers had asked them to stop the fight, but they were obviously reluctant to get involved. I mean, if the teachers couldn’t do anything about it, what could these boys do?
After the fight was settled, I walked over to the bilik guru to collect something from a teacher. I was going up the stairs when I saw policemen coming down the stairs with guns! Apparently they were called in to stop the fight, which had gone on for two hours at that point.
Later on, we found out that the fight was between schoolboys from different gangs. The school had a really huge issue with students being involved with gangs and sex work so this didn’t surprise me.
Man, government schools are wild.
2. I was skipping class when I saw a girl flash her breasts and genitals at a crowd of boys
I remember it being a Saturday. We had extra classes on that day, can’t remember why. It was my SPM year. I wasn’t in the mood to study that day. I mean, come on, it was a weekend!
I ended up skipping the last class of the day with a friend from the next class. We were joined by some friends from another class. We were chilling at a walkway together.
Then a girl walked past. A crowd of boys were following her and her two girl friends. They were hooting and hollering at her. “What’s happening?” I asked my friends. I was new to the school that year and it was only February, so there was a lot that I still had to learn about my new school.
Turns out this girl made a sex video with her boyfriend and both of them sent the video around. Pretty much everyone in the school had seen it already except for me, of course.
I tried to ignore the jeering and we continued our conversation. That is until the hollering grew more intense and the eyes of the guy with us widened in shock.
I turned around quickly to see what had happened and the girl was standing under a tree, her breasts and genitals exposed! One friend had pulled up her top and the other had pulled her pants down.
Absolutely the wildest experience I ever had in secondary school! I still don’t know what to think about it all.
3. Constant cat fights which I always got a front seat to
For some reason, fights amongst girls were really common in my school. It’s not like I went to a girls only school either! My school was co-ed.
I think at one point, there was a cat fight I’d witness about once a week. My personal favourite was this one time I was eating my chicken nuggets in the kantin sekolah when a tudung suddenly went flying in front of me! Two girls were fighting (I don’t know why) and one of them had pulled the tudung off the other and threw it away from her. For those who are curious, yes, the other girl was wearing a tudung as well.
I will freely admit that I’m a super kepo person who loves watching drama – as long as I’m not involved. It’s funny though, because I never deliberately sought out a front seat to these fights. I’m just lucky, I guess.
I’ve seen everything, from slap fights to straight up face clawing and shrieking.
The most intense one I’ve seen was this one time I was walking out the school gate with my best friend. I noticed a girl standing around outside the school, dressed in going out clothes: a tank top, skirt, handbag, heels. I didn’t pay her much attention, figuring she was maybe a girl who had cut classes or waiting for a friend.
But then when this one girl walked out, she pulled off one of her heels, ran towards the girl and just hit her in the face with the spiked heel!
I found out later from the school rumour mill that the girl with the heels was from Convent Bukit Nanas and the other girl had “stolen” her boyfriend.
TV depictions of secondary school tend to portray it as a lawless place ruled by hormones
And you know what, I guess that can be true! As adults now, looking back we can see that the experiences we accepted as common may have been really wild.
But then again, some of us may also have gone to really boring schools in comparison.
