A KL woman shares her story of being involved in a car accident and how her insurance claim went awry – due to the other party who lied and because she did not have dashcam footage to prove her side of the story.
I would like to share my experience and offer some advice to fellow drivers.
Recently, I was involved in an accident where the lorry driver didn’t accept his mistake, and unfortunately, I had no proof to back up my claim.
As a result, our insurance got claimed, which left me feeling frustrated and upset.
I hold onto hope that the truth will emerge, and that those responsible will be held accountable. Until then, I remain steadfast in my conviction that fairness and justice will ultimately triumph.
Here’s how the accident happened
Three weeks ago, I was involved in a distressing accident in Shah Alam that has left me feeling frustrated and confused.
I was waiting at a traffic light, and when it turned green, I began to move slowly at a speed of 10 to 20 km/h. Suddenly, a lorry collided with my car while changing lanes from right to left.
The impact caused terrible damage to the right side of my vehicle, with the back fender severely damaged and a tire bursting.
The damage that was caused to the writer’s car, which included dented bumpers and a burst tire.
The lorry driver took the blame (at first)
After the accident, we pulled over to the side of the road, and the lorry driver kept apologizing to me, repeatedly saying, “It’s not your mistake, sister. I didn’t look carefully while changing lanes.”
His acknowledgment of his error provided me with some relief, but the situation was still overwhelming. We both knew the consequences this incident could have on our lives.
Afterward, we went to the police station to report the incident, but unfortunately, we couldn’t file a report because the system was down.
A tow truck driver took my car to the workshop and assured me he would handle everything, including making a claim from the lorry’s insurance.
His confidence gave me hope that the matter would be resolved swiftly.

Things got messy at the police station
That same night, I returned to the police station to report the incident to the traffic police, providing a detailed account of what had transpired. I thought I was doing the right thing by being honest and transparent about the accident.
However, two weeks later, I received a call from the traffic police asking me to come in to give a formal statement.
When I met with him, I was shocked to discover that the lorry driver had twisted the story. He claimed that I was the one who hit his lorry while changing lanes.
I found this utterly confusing and deeply unfair, especially since I had stayed in my lane the entire time. He was the one who tried to enter my lane!
I was forced to take responsibility for the damages

The next day, I received a message from an unknown individual claiming to be in charge of my car.
He informed me that it was not the lorry driver’s fault and sent me a message saying, “Ni kes RTI, sendiri claim.” (This is a RTI case, so you have to make a claim using your own car insurance policy.”)
His rudeness and lack of proper introduction made me uncomfortable, so I promptly blocked him. It felt like I was being pulled deeper into a situation that was spiraling out of control.
The following day, I reached out to my car’s insurance company to seek clarification about my coverage and the claims process.
After two days of anxious waiting, I received an email stating that it was an “Own damage claim under your vehicle.”
This left me feeling bewildered and powerless. I was being unfairly punished for someone else’s mistake.
One day, the truth will prevail
This entire ordeal has been incredibly taxing, both emotionally and mentally. I can’t help but wonder: What is happening?!
Why must I face the consequences of someone else’s mistake that isn’t fully mine? It feels deeply unjust, and I find myself grappling with feelings of anger and helplessness.
However, I believe that ultimately, Justice prevails. God is watching, and so is karma. Maybe not now, but in due time, those who act carelessly will face the repercussions of their actions.
My advice to all drivers is to be extra cautious, especially when dealing with lorries and buses on the road. It’s also important to consider installing dash cameras in your car for safety purposes.
Dash cameras can provide you with the necessary proof if you ever find yourself in an accident, and they can make a huge difference when it comes to settling disputes. Otherwise, without proper evidence, it becomes difficult to take further steps.
Stay safe and take care, everyone!
