Tinder gets a bad rap for being a hookup app that forces users to judge potential partners from a handful of selfies and a few lines of text.
But maybe a couple of Instagram pics and some liberal right-swiping is all you need to find your future partner – after all, it’s known that more than a third of marriages start online, and that online couples have longer, happier marriages. But dating apps are also the origin of all sorts of stories out there – isn’t just for finding a nearby bootycall or a friends-with-benefits situation.
Here we present a few stories from Malaysians that show how weird Tinder can be:
1. He never blinked once
I matched with a cute guy on Tinder.
He looked hot and we seemed to have a lot of similar interests, from music to how we spend our free time, so he seemed promising (especially if you know that I haven’t had a boyfriend in months and that all the convos I had on Tinder were either boring or cliché or just downright insulting).
So, this guy and I messaged for a few days, maybe even a week, before he asked me out on a first date. He suggested a walk and coffee at a nice cafe.
This seemed quite okay and I did really enjoy messaging him, so I said yes.
I was very excited, so when we met and he started looking at me, almost without blinking, I assumed that this was just him being excited and nervous as well. I took it as a compliment (I know right).
The date went on, and the entire time we sat in the cafe he barely blinked. Things started to feel a bit awkward for me although the conversation went on smoothly.
We then went for a walk, and he was staring at me the same way all the time. Imagine how he managed to walk beside me and look at me at the same time. And yes, he still wasn’t blinking.
By that time, I was already freaked out, aching to call my best friend and tell her about the weirdest date I have ever been on.
I guess he thought that the date went well and tried to kiss me, but I explained to him that I think this was not going to work. His only response was: “Why? I am handsome, and you are hot” and just kept staring.
I said thanks and went home.
It was not the worst Tinder date, but there was NEVER going to be a second date.
2. He messed up my bed – literally
I met a guy on Tinder and went out on a date to a bar close to where I lived. We had a few drinks, more than advised, so my guard was down. We ended up going back to my place.
We fooled around for a while, and since he was too drunk to drive and we walked from the bar, we decided that it was better that he stayed the night.
I woke up the next day and found some cash and a note on my coffee table. Just as I was getting ready to be offended and flip out, I read what the note said: “For your bed. I am so very sorry.“
I dashed to my room and found that he had peed on my bed.
He was too embarrassed to wake me and too drunk to wake up properly and go to the bathroom. But I was laughing really hard at the situation and decided to send him a message.
I am a nurse after all – this is something I see every day at work. It wasn’t a big deal to me, although it wasn’t a perfect hookup.
I teased him that I needed help with the mattress and made light of things, so we ended up seeing each other again.
I did buy him a pack of adult diapers and gave them to him the next time he spent the night. Oh, yeah, we dated for almost a year after that and didn’t talk about the first night together.
3. I was looking for something casual and got attacked with water balloons in return
I had just gotten out of a serious relationship because I wasn’t ready to take it to the next level. I had a lot of single friends who persuaded me to go on Tinder once I joined them in being single myself.
I started exchanging messages with a younger girl (she was 21 and I was 29, a bit of an age gap but nothing too weird) and I could see from her messages that she was open to the idea of something casual.
She suggested I come over and pick her up, to take her drinking to take the edge off. It was the weekend after midterms, and she wanted to relax.
I went to meet her, and she invited me up.
Turns out she was in the middle of a water balloon fight with guys from her dorm and she still needed to get ready for our date.
Fast forward to a few minutes later: I didn’t go drinking and the date never happened. What happened instead was I got in the middle of the water balloon crossfire and consequently became soaking wet.
I know I didn’t want anything serious, but I definitely didn’t expect to be soaked in my clothes when all I wanted was dinner.
I guess this is why you should stick to your own age group for dating.
In conclusion, Tinder can be f**king weird
Sure, you can find success stories from the online dating world, but other times you could just find yourself drenched from a water balloon ambush. The risk of it is anonymity, but sometimes, it can also be the reward. With that being said, you can never be too careful.
Stay safe!
