Midnight Fusic is an alternative-rock band that consists of four passionate musicians; Arif Kamarudin, who acts as the band’s frontman and rhythm guitarist; Adrian Danial as the vocalist and lead guitarist; Firdaus Azmi, a self-taught bassist; and Muaz Rabbani, the band’s drummer!
Their music is a mix of melancholic yet groovy freedom of expression to both entertain and shine a light on issues that affect today’s youth. Drawing from their experiences dealing with mental health and the tribulations that come with navigating modernity, Midnight Fusic’s unwavering voice makes them an asset to the culture and industry.
They recently performed at the GoodVibes Weekender 2022 festival onstage after two years of being cooped up at home due to the pandemic!
During this, they would spend endless hours making new music – further honing their skills and even learning how to make their performances an unforgettable experience for the audience!
Q: Since GVF 19’, how have things changed for you guys as a band?
Arif: A lot of things have definitely changed. We’ve matured as a band, first and foremost, and I think we’ve improved a lot in terms of sounds, sonically, and stuff like that. We’re excited, though, to perform this time.
Q: How did you guys get back on your feet after MCO ended? How was your MCO, actually?
Arif: Ours was pretty wack, to be honest.
Daus: It was pretty wack, but we love doing music and playing music as a band, “Outside,” so after MCO ended, we just picked our instruments back up, got together, and practiced again until today for this year’s Good Vibes.
Q: What did you guys do during MCO?
Arif: Sleep.
Adrian: Game.
Muaz: We played a lot of games together; we spent a lot of nights gaming and having a few sneaky sleepovers, but we also made a few records while we were at home. Some records like “I Just Want To Go Outside,” “I Don’t Want To Dream,” “Think About,” and a few others.
Q: What is your Covid Lockdown “guilty pleasure”?
Arif: Oh, remember that Dalgona coffee thing? I would say that was my guilty pleasure
Daus: For me, it was probably watching a lot of TikTok, I guess.
Muaz: Tiktok and gaming in general were on the rise.
Q: What is your current “mood”?
Arif: We’re just always in the mood to perform more, actually. And we just released a song, “Summer Love” with Lil Asian Thicci, and that was the kickstart for us again after the lockdown and everything. So, we’ve got a couple of songs written down already. We’re still trying to head down to the studio and record those songs. So, I would say our mood is motivated.
Q: When are you guys going to get married?
All: Whoa?!
Muaz: No, man.
Adrian: I mean, we’re still pretty young. We’re all like 22, so not for a while, I think. For us, we’re focusing more on our music, our careers, and our future. I think once we’re kind of ready, we’ll settle down and get married.
Arif: When the time comes.
Adrian: When the time is right, yeah. We don’t want to rush anything.
Q: What do you miss most about MCO?
Adrian: For me, it’s being able to stay at home. Half of the time, it gets boring, and you want to go out, but the other half, you also get to do a lot of things at home. You get to play many games, and you have time for yourself at home.
Arif: I spent a lot of time reflecting, which gave me time for myself and kept me away from people for a while. So, before the pandemic, I was always out and about, seeing many people, which can be exhausting. So the pandemic helped me to reflect, kick back, and relax.
Q: If you could choose what you come back as when you are reincarnated, what animal would you come back as?
Adrian: I want to be a cat.
Muaz: I was about to say the same thing. They live their best life.
Adrian: I think Muaz looks like a black cat. (Arif: Adrian is an oyen.) I think I’m an oyen, for sure.
Arif: I think I’d want to be a dinosaur in the land before time. Adrian: “Dinosaurs are not real.” Dude, they are. They found bones and sh*t.
Daus: “ Wanna be an eagle so I can fly.”
Others: Whoa…
Q: What qualities do you look for in a relationship?
Arif: Just commitment. I think commitment is a priority. For me, commitment comes before anything.
Daus: Communications, I guess.
Adrian: Patience.
Muaz: I think it’s making each other happy and making each other laugh.
Q: What have you been struggling with recently?
Arif: Anxiety, man. Like, just having normal conversations. I think at one point, I forgot how to have a normal conversation because I was really quiet during the pandemic. So when everything was fine again, and we could go out, I couldn’t even order food at the cashier for a while because I would mess up my order so much.
Q: What do you have planned for the future?
Adrian: More music. More shows. We hope to release more music by the end of the year. It’ll have new sounds; it won’t sound like any of our older songs, so we’re trying to experiment with that.
Arif: We’re also working on our live performances. I think there’s always room for improvement, so we’re still working towards making our live performances an experience for people, and that’s one of our top priorities right now.
Q: How do you deal with your fame in Malaysia? Do people flood you when you go to KLCC or wherever?
Adrian: I don’t think we’re that famous yet. I don’t think we’re at that point where we walk out and people want to take pictures with us.
Arif: I mean, yeah, yeah, and we mostly get attention after shows or before shows when we’re already at the venue where we’ll be performing—it’s something that we can already expect. As a result, we don’t get it very often. We’re fine with that.
Adrian: However, with how the numbers on our social media are going—people are tweeting and messaging us more now—I feel like that also has a psychological effect on us. It’s like people know who we are, and we’re kind of being watched or listened to. As a result, I suppose it’s also pressuring. But we’re working on that.
Arif: We’re still humans, man.
Q: How would you describe your fashion in one word?
Muaz: I’d say we’re dapper. We’re pretty dapper on a daily basis. We’re looking dapper right now.
Adrian: Extra.
Arif: Layered.
Daus: For myself, black, I guess.
Q: What’s your message to everyone going to the Good Vibes Weekender?
Arif: To our fans, thank you so much for the love and support that you’ve given us for the past few years. To our new fans or listeners who are only now listening to us at GoodVibes, we hope we give you a good show and experience. We hope, overall, that GoodVibes treats you well. We hope that everyone stays hydrated and looks out for each other.
