This heartwarming story is shared by a M’sian woman who discovered her lost cat at a mamak in SS15, Subang Jaya.
Losing Rascal was one of the hardest things my family and I have ever gone through. He wasn’t just a cat to us—he was part of the family. With his tiger-striped fur and quiet, cuddly personality, Rascal had been with us for years.
My husband, daughter, and I have lived in Sunway since the early 2000s, and we joked that we moved into Rascal’s house because he was the original ‘owner’ living in the garden before we moved in.
He became our well-loved, constant companion in, out and all around the house. He’d curl up next to me on the couch every evening, purring softly. I never thought we’d lose him, but he didn’t come home one day.
The Search for Rascal
When Rascal went missing, I felt a hole in my heart. We searched everywhere—walking through the neighbourhood, calling his name, and asking neighbours if they’d seen him.
My daughter even made several appeals on TikTok. I posted an appeal on Instagram, and even my husband was posting on FaceBook. We joined community WhatsApp groups, spreading his picture far and wide.
Days turned into weeks, and as much as I tried to stay hopeful, the worry was overwhelming. Where was he? Was he safe? He used to be a street cat, but years of domestic living had polished the mean streets off him.
A Message of Hope
Three months later, when I had almost given up hope, we got a message that changed everything. One of the staff at a Mamak in SS15 Subang Jaya contacted me via Instagram.
He’d seen a tiger-striped cat matching Rascal’s description—and he wasn’t alone. Rascal had been spending time at their restaurant and was often seen in the company of another stray.
I’ve never booked a Grab so fast in my life.
The Reunion
When we arrived, I spotted Rascal right away. He was sleeping on the steps in front of the mamak. I called his name, unsure of how he’d react after all this time. His eyes shot open, and he immediately looked at me. I will never forget his face—the instant recognition.
He came running to me, head-butting and purring like he always did. I couldn’t hold back my tears. I hugged him tightly, feeling his warmth again after so long. His claws sank in gently, holding on to me tight.
My husband and daughter were overjoyed, laughing and petting him as we celebrated his return.
Meeting Jinxie
But that wasn’t the end of the story. The eatery owner told us Rascal hadn’t been alone—he’d been sticking close to a stray tortoiseshell cat he called Jinxie. She was small but feisty, with a mix of black, orange, and brown fur.
Jinixe had been watching our reunion and seemed to know and understand that Rascal was going home. I hesitated for a long moment. It had been months… and this other cat had been his friend and companion for those months.
I didn’t want him to feel lonely or wander off again. I looked at my husband, who gave me a “No!” look. My daughter settled everything by reappearing next to us with a purring Jinxie cradled in her arms. She held Jinxie next to Rascal, and their twin purring was even louder. There was no question about it.
My husband looked at his daughter, then at me, and knew he’d already lost the battle. So, we adopted her, and Jinxie joined our family.
Gratitude and Lessons
Having Rascal and Jinxie home has brought us so much joy. Watching them play together or curl up side by side reminds me of how much love they share. I’m incredibly grateful to the eatery owner and the kind people who cared for Rascal while he was missing.
“I’m so thankful to those who fed and cared for him during his time as a stray. Without them, he might not have survived.”
Losing Rascal was a painful experience, but it taught me how mighty kindness and community can be. In the end, we didn’t just get Rascal back—we found Jinxie, too, an unexpected blessing that completed our family.
