Encik Haffiez has brittle bone disease, a bone growth near his heel that causes him daily pain, a child who has been fighting a chronic heart condition for 16 years, and a home-based kek lapis business in Setia Alam that sometimes goes a full day without a single sale.
In an interview with EzLokal, Encik Haffiez said he sells kek lapis from his home both physically and online to support his family of four children.
Despite how little he makes, he continues to show up for his family.
“There are days when I really can’t sell anything,” he said.
His eldest child recently underwent a sixth heart surgery. For those who assume the hardest part is over, Encik Haffiez was direct:
“Some people would say things like, ‘Isn’t the operation already done?’ But like I’ve said before, it’s actually the cost of care that makes us struggle.”
“I have four children. My eldest is the one with a chronic heart condition for life. I’ve been taking care of my child for almost 16 years,” he said.
What he had to put aside
When Encik Haffiez began sharing his story publicly alongside his business, some accused him of using his child’s illness as a marketing tactic. He admitted the beginning was not easy and that he questioned why he was being tested this way. But he chose to continue.
“So I put my shame aside. Sometimes there are people who make remarks, but no matter what, I will not give up,” he said.
“I will not give up. I will continue trying with whatever I have. I don’t want my children to suffer.”
