“Now, I only think about finding money to raise my child. It is okay if I eat once a day, but not my child.”
That is Muhammad Amjad Jamaludin, 26, a single father to a three-year-old daughter named Ayla Sofea.
The day everything changed
Muhammad Amjad and his wife separated on the second day of Hari Raya this year. He became a single father not long after. The family business had already collapsed, partly under the weight of rising rental costs. He had done the rounds before, car wash, vehicle painting shop, night markets, courier warehouse. KL felt like the only option left.
He arrived with RM90.
The stall that went viral
For a period after arriving, he sold vegetables with his family. Long beans, spinach, water spinach. What came in from the sales went out almost immediately on fertiliser and basic necessities. He posted a photo of himself sitting alone at the stall and described it as a man’s lowest point. He did not expect anyone to pay attention.
Netizens in Malaysia and Indonesia did. Words of encouragement flooded in. The post travelled further than he anticipated.
Where he is now
Muhammad Amjad has since found steadier ground. He now works as a production operator at a factory near Subang Bestari, Shah Alam and has been there for about a year. Ayla Sofea is under the care of his mother, who is herself unwell due to nerve problems. His parents are currently staying in a house with the help of someone who chose to assist them.
He hopes to run his own business again one day. His goal has not changed.
