A Malaysian man has gone viral after sharing how a hobby that once felt harmless ended up costing him nearly RM200,000, leaving him with a collection he now regrets.
How it began
He said it started simply.
He liked the design of Bearbrick and Labubu figures, and buying a few pieces felt reasonable. They became part of his space, something he enjoyed looking at.
Things began to change after he joined online collector groups.
People were constantly posting new purchases, rare pieces, and rising values.
Slowly, his attention shifted from what he liked to what others had.
When it stopped feeling the same
“It stopped being about liking them.”
That was the point where the hobby changed.
What used to be a personal interest began to feel like something else.
He found himself watching releases more closely and thinking about what he might miss out on. The focus was no longer just the figures, but keeping up.
The spending followed that shift. What started small gradually grew into thousands, and eventually tens of thousands of Ringgit.
By the time he paused to look at it properly, the total had reached close to RM200,000.
What he is left with now
His home is now filled with display cabinets of figures, but he said they serve little purpose beyond being displayed.
He tried selling some of them, but there was little demand.
Many could not even be sold at the price he originally paid.
That, he suggested, is the part he did not expect.
A blunt realisation
Looking at the collection now, he said the money could have gone towards something more practical.
But what stayed with him most was how easily the spending felt justified at the time.
“You think you’re investing, you’re actually just helping people clear their stock.”
